OCTA Innovation Newsletter #19-2018 – Sint Eustatius

EU, namely European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development is supporting Overseas Countries and Territories in developing and implementing innovation and creativity for islands’ sustainable growth. In that framework, EU is funding pilot innovation project called Statia Blue. Project is basically using the latest technologies to develop sustainable fishery. The idea behind a smartphone app that could transform the Caribbean fishing industry has been launched on the Dutch island of St. Eustatius. When introduced as a test project later this year, the fishing App will link the supply of the local daily catch directly to the demand from the regional market.

Invitation for OCTA Innovation BIC Award nominations is extended to Innovation Boards and their Innovation Managers. Both entities and individuals with any kind of innovation drive and success in any field of activities including business, education, art and creativity are eligible for nominations. Awards will be presented at the occasion of the coming Thematic Workshop or particular local event.
The nominations are expected to be received by June 30th 2018.

Definitely tourism agglomeration and particular niches of tourism such as diving, ecotourism and scientific tourism are of the highest potential for building sustainable economy for prosperous and inclusive society.

Overseas Countries and Territories are embracing innovation as one the most important drivers of the economy. Montserrat is organizing Innovation Days in August 2018. Focus of the event is very concrete. How innovation will move development of the island, all in line with the latest Montserrat Economic Growth Strategy and Delivery Plan final version issued the most recently, in February 2018.

Slogan of the Innovation days is “Innovation for sustainable growth” and topics of particular attention are: Development of entrepreneurial innovation eco system, Innovation policy and instruments with special attention to development of agriculture and organic farming and to tourism agglomerate, specially in niches of “visitor economy”.

Introduction of electric vehicles helps to reduce CO2-emissions and the dependence on petroleum. Implementing green transport in OCTs, could help at the same time to be economically better and to stay uncontaminated. Countries that rely on low air pollutant emitting fuel mixes may gain a lot in terms of avoided external costs. The benefits extend in protection of environment and enhancement of economy especially in green business and tourism.
