Supporting the Turks and Caicos Islands’ budding entrepreneurs

Supporting the Turks and Caicos Islands’ budding entrepreneurs

Leader of OCTA Innovation, Milan Jezic von Gesseneck, has discussed support for a workshop to further the business skills of young people in Turks and Caicos.

It was one of the subjects raised at a meeting between Mr Jezic von Gesseneck and Innovation Manager of Turks and Caicos, Alexa Cooper-Grant with Young Corporate Alliance (YCA) on October 27th.

The OCTA Innovation Leader suggested a workshop could focus on learning from best practice: business incubators and accelerators, the green economy and certification.

YCA is building the business acumen of young professionals and entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35 in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Its activities include forging partnerships with private sector bodies and business leaders and organising workshops and lectures to share knowledge and empower the island’s rising economic operators.

It has enlisted law firms, banks, marketing specialists, and insurance companies to offer discount rates to young locals with a YCA membership during their first year in business.

Curaçao’s Connecting the Dots Inspire, Innovate and Accelerate Business Conference is a fact!

Curaçao’s Connecting the Dots Inspire, Innovate and Accelerate Business Conference is a fact!

Curaçao organized the first edition of ‘Connecting the Dots Inspire, Innovate and Accelerate Business Conference’ from October 19 up to 22, 2016.

The conference is a continuation to the ‘Innovate your Business Now’ Innovation seminar for SME’s in Curaçao which was organized earlier this year in on March 23, 2016.

During the ‘Innovate your Business Now’ seminar in March several speakers from the Netherlands and the Caribbean region that have successfully applied innovation in their business (smart, creative and green) got the opportunity to share their story with around 200 participants. In the end, the participants indicated that they would like to hear more stories from local entrepreneurs and also receive more practical information that would help them innovate their business.

As a result, the organizing team came with a 3 full day business conference containing inspiring local and international keynotes in the morning, enlightening workshops in the afternoon and exciting networking events in the evening addressing the theme: Inspire, Innovate and Accelerate. The goal of the conference is to stimulate entrepreneurs of local SME’s and aspiring young entrepreneurs to be more innovative and also grow their business. Another objective is to promote more cooperation between the different stakeholders and connect initiatives.

The platform behind ‘Connecting the Dots’ consists of the Ministry of Economic Development of Curaçao, University of Curaçao, Curaçao Technology and Innovation Institute, Startup Curaçao, Curaçao Investment & Export Promotion Agency, National Platform for Youth Development and the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands in Willemstad.

The opening night of the conference and networking event themed “Our biggest screw ups” started with a bang and you could feel the level of excitement increase as the speakers shared their stories of failure in their entrepreneurial journey with the public. After the eloquent speech by the Minister of Economic Development, 3 local entrepreneurs each with a different story shared their lessons learned from passed mistakes in order to prevent others from making the same errors.

The following days of Inspire, Innovate and Accelerate featured surprisingly great speakers such as the local entrepreneur Ana Freitas Frias from Integra Natural, interactive workshops, creative processes (‘Effectual Idea Lab’ networking event), bonding (creation of a community), new topics like setting up a tech business, fintech, trends and trend watching, challenger marketing, wonderful examples of determination, execution and acceleration (Curaloe, ATECH), dialogue on the creative sector and food industry and new insights and tips like, how every successful entrepreneur needs a ‘hacker’, ‘hipster’ and ‘hustler’ (by Oscar Kneppers).

Curaçao looks back at a wonderful conference with great potential for further development.

TEDxAruba – Shining Example of Innovation and Creativity

TEDxAruba – Shining Example of Innovation and Creativity

Coming up on the 23rd September is the highlight of innovation at Aruba, TEDxAruba. Fully charged with ideas and creative energy, TEDxAruba is one the best examples how innovation can flourish on a small island. TEDxAruba is in competition for OCTA Innovation BIC (Business, Innovation and Creativity) Award to be announced on the occasion of 2IC (International Innovation Conference), that OCTA Innovation is organising for November this year.

TEDxAruba strives for sustainable innovation, new business creation and bringing ideas to life, not only for Aruba, but also for other similar small economies, especially of SIDS (Small Islands Developing States). The TEDxAruba mission is to propagate innovative Ideas and actions.

The specific goal is to turn TEDxAruba into the leading platform and pipeline for great ideas, storytelling, creativity and actionable innovation. In addition to this, the goal is to foster a sense of community amongst the people and organizations who have gathered (and continue to gather) around this event and to provide a cultural driving force for conversation and action on how to create a sustainable and prosperous society.

This year, first time ever, TEDxAruba starts at 9 in the morning (rather that its usual evening time). This will enable global audiences to watch inspiring speeches and asking questions on social media…. engaging with TEDxAruba. This is already creating excitement, especially here in Brussels, where OCTA Innovation is considering organising our BUZZ event, bringing together flow of ideas from Aruba and engaged Brussels audiences. Watch this space.

Bureau of Innovation in Aruba

Bureau of Innovation in Aruba

Aruba expressed its serious commitment to becoming the most innovative island in the Caribbean the moment the Ministry of General Affairs established a Bureau of Innovation (BI). In the second term of Prime Minister Mike Eman’s  administration, the Ministry of General affairs was extended with Innovation, Sustainable Development and Science. This was institutionalized in 2014 with the establishment of a multidisciplinary team of professionals dedicated to strategically develop, support and advice on the areas of social-, technological- and economical innovation for the benefit of Aruba’s vision to create sustainable and shared prosperity.

Having a Bureau of Innovation is unique as Aruba is the only island and OCT to have such a think-tank within the government. BI translates worldwide developments to opportunities, gaps and challenges for Aruba’s endeavor to create a sustainable society.

When realizing initiatives, BI works from a ‘triple helix way of working’ (i.e. government/private sector/knowledge centra) to make it as sustainable as possible
Among projects executed by BI are TEDXAruba; Green’S’Cool (educating the next generation on the importance of living green and instill environmentally friendly behaviors among Aruban citizens) and Start-up Aruba (private-public initiative to co-create and facilitate the development of a sustainable technology and startup ecosystem in Aruba). BI also advises different Ministries, departments, businesses, NGO’s and other stakeholders on innovation- and sustainability topics.

Considering the above-described projects, one can consider BI a department within a company that is in charge of new developments. In the case of BI, the company happens to be the Government of Aruba. This position enables BI to not only make an impact on a national level but permits the dissemination of knowledge to ensure sustainable progress – which is the true mission of BI.

TEDxAruba International Live Viewing Events

TEDxAruba International Live Viewing Events

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The setup for these TEDx events can be relatively small with an audience of a maximum of 100 participants.
Through Mr. Jim Stolze, TED Ambassador and organizer of TEDxAmsterdam and TEDxBinnenhof, TEDxAruba obtained a license which includes permission to live stream the event for the whole world to see. The solid Internet connection and technical support will be provided and executed by Digicel Business.
This week, the partnership between TEDxAruba Foundation and Digicel Business has been formalized. Digicel Business will provide the internet connection and other business solutions which will bring this event to a next level.
