The economy has remained traditional and low-monetized. Self consumption represents 26% of total expendituree of households and the government provides significant support to the local economy, mainly through State subsidies. The remoteness and isolation of the archipelago does not favour the development of the tourism sector. Key opportunities for innovation Economic niches to identify within: agro-food production, sustainable tourism, energetic optimisation, environment management, waste management, handicrafts, traditional knowledge and skills to be maintained and enhanced.
