Statia Blue a smartphone app towards a more equitable and sustainable fishing industry

Currently EU is funding pilot innovation project called Statia Blue. Project is basically using the latest technologies to develop sustainable fishery. The idea behind a smartphone app that could transform the Caribbean fishing industry has been launched on the Dutch island of St. Eustatius. When introduced as a test project later this year, the fishing App will link the supply of the local daily catch directly to the demand from the regional market. Dr. Teresa Leslie, Director of the St Eustatius Foundation who is managing EU funded innovation pilot project on the island comments: “Every fishermen on St. Eustatius has already agreed to use this technology. What is amazing is how the older the fishermen, the keener they are to use the technology. By owning the market process instead of being owned by the market, our fishermen in the region will ensure a more equitable and sustainable fishing industry.
